What makes his playing so amazing is that the left side of his body was badly burned in a fire when he was a teenager, (he used a cane the rest of his life) his left hand took the worst of it. He could only use his pinky and ring? fingers on chords. If you look at pictures of him playing you see them curled up but he was never bitter about it, that handicap gave him his signature sound.
